Abstract

The limitations of Terzaghi's bearing capacity equation and Ko and Scott's simple non-dimensional charts are discussed. A non-dimensional solution, which is based on the Sokolovskii method for the rough foundation and for which a computer program has been developed suitable for analysing smooth, rough and partially rough foundations, is presented. It is concluded that this non-dimensional bearing capacity chart is a simple way of finding the exact solution to the ultimate bearing capacity of a foundation obtained by plasticity theory, but that more information on the distribution of shearing resistance along the foundation-soil interface or limiting equilibrium is required. /TRRL/
