Abstract

An ultrasonic pulse-echo inspection system (up to 100 MHz) has been equiped with a fast digitizer in order to allow a full volume acquisition of ultra sonic data. A powerful workstation with modern visualization software is used to represent the ultrasonic volume data. Any desired cross section plane inside the object can be selected and displayed in real time. Small defects and variations in the density distribution are imaged by the computed tomography (μCT) with high contrast. In the reconstructed cross sections a pixel size down to 10 μm is realized. Among all the requirements, which a system with high resolution capabilities has to accomplish, we are especially discussing the influence of the radiographic imaging system on the achievable resolution. The same software, used to represent the ultrasonic volume data, is also employed for a 3D-visualization of the 2D reconstructed cross sections of the μCT.
