Abstract
An empirical equation, developed earlier for predicting the moisture contents of single kernels of field corn from radio-frequency (RF) measurements, has been used successfully for popcorn kernels. Measurements of capacitance, dissipation factor, and/or phase angle with an impedance analyzer at 1 and 4.5 MHz on a small parallel-plate capacitor holding the kernel between the plates predicted kernel moisture contents for 97% of the popcorn kernels tested in the moisture range from 11 to 25%, wet basis, within 1% moisture content.
