Abstract
A preliminary study of the application of speckle shearographic methods in the nondestructive inspection of the curved surfaces of soft tissue phantoms is presented. An extended theoretical formulation dealing with the slope fringe formation in the curved surface of the phantom tissue specimen is derived and compared with the experimentally obtained fringe patterns. Abnormalities are introduced in different layers of the half-cylindrical shaped tissue phantom that resembles abnormal growths in body cavities such as polyps in different parts of the gastrointestinal path, especially in the large intestine. A qualitative comparison of the shear fringe patterns for specimens with and without abnormalities is presented and the fringe patterns are compared with the slope contours generated numerically using finite element modeling.
