Abstract

In this paper, the quality of randomly distributed glass fibers reinforced composite material with the presence of intentionally introduced defects was experimentally studied using novel optical transmission scanning (OTS) system. Results showed that OTS successfully identified not only existing defects but also was able to visualize the uniformity of randomly distributed fibers within the laminate. Moreover, the high lateral resolution of OTS allowed evaluating the direction and the size of separate chopped fibers. Combined tensile tests and OTS inspection revealed that depending on the locations of defects and unevenly distributed fibers, the strength of the material was varied considerably. Generally, current work could be considered as a potential solution for performance prediction in lightweight structures applications.
