Abstract

Recently, it has been proposed that solitons can be applied to increase the transmission rates in optical fibers. However due to their complex soliton solutions derived by Hirata method, it is pretty hard to study the properties of multiple nondegenerate solitons. In this paper, we investigate the general formula of nondegenerate N-soliton solutions for Manakov system by the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction. Based on the soliton solutions in determinant forms, different double-hump profiles of nondegenerate solitons are analyzed graphically with the consideration on their application in communication systems. The collisions between three nondegenerate solitons are studied via asymptotic analysis in detail. We further observe the collisions between two nondegenerate solitons and two normal single-hump solitons. We hope these results contribute to the study of soliton communication.
