Abstract
The influence of precompression on the stability of a cantilever column under the action of a subtangential force is investigated. Included also in the results is a limit on the position of the applied subtangential force (for a given precompression) at which a static equilibrium configuration is possible as opposed to a kinetic or flutter mode of stability.
