Abstract

In most studies of administration investigators have not tried to observe and characterize non-verbal, on-the-job behavior. The following article reports the findings of two pilot studies focusing upon such behavior in very different settings. While admitting the limitations of their own efforts, the authors strongly urge continued attention to the conceptual and methodological problems in assessing the non-verbal behavior of administrators. Mr. Lipham is the chairman of the Department of Ed ucational Administration at the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Francke is Assistant Superintendent, Community High School District 218 in Blue Island, Illinois.
