Abstract

The zero-point energy for a spherical membrane in 3+1 dimensions is calculated as a function of its radius. The contribution is negative, normalized to zero at the origin. Summing the classical and quantum contributions to the hamiltonian produces a candidate for the ground state that is tachyonic, stable, and of a well-defined size.
