Abstract

Equilibrium measurements were made on the nitrogen partial-pressure-temperature-composition relationship in the system V-N. In the range of p N 2 = 5 × 10 −4 −1 atm and T = 1100–1700 °C, δ-VN and β-V 2N were formed. The nitrogen-deficient phase boundary of the δ phase changed with temperature from VN 0.65 at T = 1400 °C to VN 0.60 at T = 1700 °C, while the nitrogen-saturated limit of β-phase was VN 0.51 and almost independent of temperature. The nitrogen partial pressure was expressed by log p N 2 = −14370/ T + 5.55 for the β-δ equilibrium. The relative partial molal enthalpy and entropy of nitrogen were calculated as a function of composition for δ-phase.
