Abstract

AbstractA solution to the problem of non‐steady, stratified laminar flow of incompressible fluids through horizontal conduits is presented. The method is able to treat stratified flows of an arbitrary number of layers through two dimensional conduits and concentric flows of an arbitrary number of layers through cylindrical conduits by using the technique of quasi‐orthogonalization. The validity of the method is tested by presenting results for a two‐layered start‐up flow in a two‐dimensional duct. As the time approaches infinity the velocity profiles calculated by this method agree with steady flow velocity profiles obtained by other authors.
