Abstract

Four hundred and thirty-six specimens of lymphoid structures obtained at operations and necropsies were examined for infection with mycobacteria. Myco, tuberculosis was isolated from one mediastinal lymph node. Nine ‘Battey’ type mycobacteria were isolated from cervical, mediastinal and inguinal nodes and three slow-growing chromogenic mycobacteria from cervical and inguinal nodes. Thirty-six appendices and 53 ileocaecal nodes, were found to be free of infection. Asymptomatic infection with mycobacteria occurs frequently in Queensland residents. The most common portals of entry seem to be the tonsils and skin of the feet and legs.
