Abstract

Objectives: ERAS is a multimodal, multidisciplinary approach to the care of the patient undergoing surgery that includes a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and patient care staff. ERAS programs include essential elements such as targeted fluid management, avoidance of drains and tubes, effective pain control, early mobilization, and promotion of early enteral feeding. ERAS started primarily with colorectal surgery but has been shown to improve outcomes in all major surgical specialties.
