Abstract

The article analyzes the family names of the Zhytomyr region of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, formed from the names and nicknames of the category «nomina impersonalia». The source for the research is the published and handwritten monuments of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, among which the vast majority are handwritten Zhytomyr castle act books (1582–1713). This reviewed family names came from the names of the representatives of the fauna (wild and domestic animals and birds, insects and their groups, reptiles, fish) and flora (trees and bushes, cereal and herbaceous plants, vegetables, mushrooms, fruits). Also the names of different types of food; the names of tools, household items, their parts and other things (musical instruments, fabrics, clothes, shoes, ornaments, articles of everyday use) became the basis for them. This group of the family name is formed from the names: a) natural phenomenon, different time concepts; b) abstract concepts; c) diseases, physical defects; d) relief and various types of vegetation cover, etc. Even family names, derived from non-native names and nicknames, indicate the order of the birth of a child in the family. In general, the names of the category «nomina impersonalia» are reflected in 786 names of ordinary people of Zhytomyr region of the the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which makes up 31,7 %, and in the 160 names of the gentry – 12,45 %.
