Abstract

It is shown that for finite amplitude Langmuir solitons the quasi-neutrality assumption breaks down. For moving solitons, deviations from quasi-neutrality are in general as important as ion nonlinearities. Even for standing solitions, the quasi-neutrality assumption fails when the ions are hot. By perturbation analysis, the correct non-neutral solutions are presented. Physical implications are discussed.
