Abstract

The stability of rotor bearing systems is analyzed. It is demonstrated that non-linear descriptions of the expressions for the lubricating fluid forces are required in order to obtain results which agree with experimental observations. This leads to a better understanding of the oil whip phenomenon than currently exists. The method of analysis is a new variation of the classical slowly varying parameter method.
