Abstract

In this communication we have studied the non-linear evolution of the beam width of a mixture of two elliptically polarised degenerate modes, oscillating at the same frequency. The initial irradiance profile of the mode fields do not have axial symmetry. The study reveals that unlike in the case of axisymmetric beam profile, monotonic and nonmonotonic regimes of the nonlinear evolution are possible. The variation of the angle of rotation of the polarisation ellipse with the depth of penetration has also been studied.
