Abstract

A number of methods are available for the solution of elastica problems including the analytical elliptic-integral approach, various predictor-corrector methods and discrete analyses based on non-linear finite-element theory. In this paper an alternative discrete approach is proposed based on obtaining, by Dynamic Relaxation, finite difference solutions to the governing differential equations. Results from the method are presented for the large deflection behaviour of a cantilever beam and a circular ring and satisfactory correlation is demonstrated with the results of previously published exact analyses.
