Abstract

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis L1-3 serovars, has emerged as a cause of proctitis amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) in much of the developed world. In Western Europe a marked and persistent increase in cases of rectal LGV has been seen amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) since 2003. During this time the epidemiology of LGV in the UK has evolved from sporadic, mostly imported, heterosexual infections to a sustained outbreak centred on London and Brighton primarily affecting HIV-positive MSM.
