Abstract
We consider a quantum particle constrained to the surface of a torus that we parametrize by its azimuthal and polar angle. We show that the corresponding Schrodinger equation does not have closed-form solutions (in the sense of Liouvillian functions) that depend on the polar angle only. It follows that if there are any wavefunctions in closed form, they must contain nondegenerate, special functions.
