Abstract

Rate constants for vibrational energy transfer have been measured in the system N 2( v= 1) +CO( v=0) as a function of energy mismatch by using isotopic derivatives of N 2 and of CO. These rate constants have been determined both in the gas phase and in liquid argon solution at 85 K. For non-resonant processes we find k L= k G for the nearest to resonant system we find k L < k G. This result is considered to arise because long range forces important in near-resonant energy transfer operate to a lesser extent in the liquid phase.
