Abstract

This article aims to explore different expressions in the Korean language which is used to describe a profession. It will examine in particular three predicative constructions associated with spatial nouns. These constructions are particularly interesting because they are polysemic and they each have a professional reading. This reading is nevertheless deeply dependent on the spatial nouns that accompanies the predicate and the choice of the spatial nouns in question is partly dictated by practical constraints and the socio-cultural circumstances. The social value that Koreans attach to the professions is thus reflected in the language through a sophisticated system of designations.
