Abstract
This chapter deals with nominal derivation (nominalization), that is the process that derives a noun from another word category, normally a verb or an adjective. The chapter focuses on participant nominalizations, deverbal nominalizations that are ambiguous between event and result/object readings, and de-adjectival nominalizations that are ambiguous between a state and a quality reading. The main question the chapter deals with is why nominalizations surface with the same form, although they differ in meaning. It discusses various approaches that have attempted to establish generalizations as to which meanings cluster together.
