Abstract

Abstract In nominal morphology, the categories which underwent restructuring under the impact of indirect diffusion are the ones present in both Tucanoan and in Arawak languages. These categories—marked on the noun and within a noun phrase— include possession (§4.1); classifiers, genders, and animacy (§4.2), and number (§4.3). Nominal categories reanalysed and developed under the impact of East Tucanoan languages in Tariana are nominal past tense, and vocative forms for kinship terms (§4.4), and cases for core and oblique grammatical relations (§4.5). In §4.6 I consider the diffusional impact on the structure of numerals and in §4.7 on demonstratives. The last section, §4.8, contains a brief summary.
