Abstract

SummaryThere are no criteria of scientific value by which Glyptostrobus oregonensis Brown and G. nordenskioldii (Heer) Brown (including G. dakotensis Brown) may be distinguished from G. europaeus (Brongniart) Heer. G. europaeus is a form species of wide geographical and geological range for fossil specimens similar to extant Glyptostrobus pensilis (Lambert) Koch. While it is possible that the fossil form species represents several biological species, specificity has not been proven for any specimen from the North American Tertiary. There is no proof that the Cretaceous Glyptostrobus comoxensis Bell is a Glyptostrobus.
