Abstract
Nomad Labour is a term used by Marx to define a specific group of labourers in the industrial reserve army and the process of capitalist accumulation. They are the 'light infantry of capital' which, with high geographical mobility can respond rapidly to changes in the spatial demand for labour. This paper argues that in the modem welfare-nation-state, this property of nomadism is essential for the possibility of an industrial reserve army. It is further suggested that Palestinian labour takes the role of the nomad industrial reserve army in the socio-economic space of modem Israel. This interpretation is supported by preliminary findings from a recent field survey on Arab labour in Israel.
