Abstract

Existing methods of reporting noise levels caused by large transformers have shortcomings because of the directional radiation usually encountered with these machines. A new method of measurement and evaluation for transformers has been developed. Several measurements have been made by this method on substation transformers of from 7.5 to 90 MVA. Radiation patterns are clearly indicated and the distribution of sound energy both by direction and octave band is shown. Strengths and weaknesses of the new method are discussed.
