Abstract

A detailed estimate has been made of the total impacted area and population around the nation's air carrier airports. Results of this analysis are summarized in this paper to illustrate unique modeling aspects in the area of land use and population density. The model is based, in part, on results of an earlier study conducted for the Department of Transportation on 23 of the nation's airports (DOT-TST-75-3) and on an analysis of operations at all air carrier airports. Three statistically average airports (AVports) were constructed to represent air carrier operations ranging from 10 to 1600 per day. Population data from census records for over 110 airports were used to construct corresponding average towns (AVtowns) around each AVport. The baseline estimate of the total impacted land area and population within the Ldn 65-dB contour in 1972 was 2740 square miles and 7.1 million people. The noise impact models are used to evaluate cost effectiveness of a number of noise abatement alternatives including aircraft noise reduction, operational changes, and land use or residential noise reduction treatments. [The study was supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.]
