Abstract

Today's world of recreation offers a variety of opportunities for noise exposure. Demolition derbies are a popular activity at midwestern county fairs, where afficionados can attend two or three a week during July and August. A survey of three events yielded A-weighted sound levels in the grandstand varying from 60 dB to over 100 dB, depending on the activity and the proximity to the “pit.” Dosimeter readings for a 212-h event showed an Leq of 87 dB(A). Typical durations of these events do not appear to pose significant hearing hazards to members of the audience unless they are also exposed to other noisy hobbies or occupations. The drivers' noise exposures, however, are another matter.
