Abstract
Polymer gears are used for low and moderate loading conditions. Metal gears have been replaced by polymer gears in various applications till date. They have less weight, lower inertia and run much quieter than their metal counterparts. This study focuses on the noise generation from the polymer gears running at different torque and speed. Polymer gears are injection molded using three different polymeric materials, viz. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polyoxymethylene (POM) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Four different torque levels of 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 and 2 Nm along with four rotational speeds of 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 rpm are selected for this study. Gears have been tested for a fixed number of cycles of 1.2×105. Sound power levels are recorded and analysed for various running combinations of fabricated gears. The results show that the speed is the most significant factor for the noise emission from the polymer gears.
