Abstract

In this work a detailed study of the noise characteristics of keepered magnetic recording media will be given. The signals we study in this paper are acquired in the time-domain from a small section of a thin-film keepered or unkeepered recording medium. We apply time-domain (RMS noise voltage) as well as spectral (Fast Fourier Transform) techniques to analyze the noise characteristics of the media. We show that the media noise characteristics are different for a keepered disk than for an unkeepered disk and that for the keepered disk these noise characteristics depend on the technique by which the keepered disk is fabricated.
