Abstract

A standard cotton-textile loom has been installed in a semianechoic chamber and a series of measurements made to determine the mechanical actions resulting in sound generation. The instrumentation used to identify and evaluate impulse sounds generated in the loom are described. The measurements made shown that the principal source of noise results from a series of impacts during acceleration and deceleration of the shuttle. Attempts to reduce the noise generated by shuttle impact are discussed.
