Abstract

Seventy-two lodges of Neotoma albigula were examined near Sabino Canyon in southern Arizona. Triatoma rubida uhleri was found to overwinter in those lodges, primarily in the 5th instar. Triatoma protracta protracta was found overwintering in various stages, including the adult. The 5th-instar T. r. ulheri represents a facultative diapause stage; most bugs collected in that instar and placed in an incubator will not molt to adult until May, the normal time for adult molting. Triatoma r. ulheri bugs entering the 5th instar in summer do not diapause but molt directly to adult. Males of T. r. ulheri molt earlier in the season than females, accounting for a predominance of males at a black light from 31 May to 6 July.
