Abstract

Recently Astapowitch [1961] and Fogle [1965] have given observation of noctilucent clouds in tabular form for USSR and North America. It is shown by Fogle [1965] that noctilucent clouds occurred over North America more frequently than previously supposed. In 1885 the first observation of noctilucent clouds was made in Germany by Backhouse at Kissingen. During the following years (1885–1894) many other observations were made, e.g., by Jesse. In later years (1894–1949) in Germany the number reported rose and fell, partly depending on the attention given to them by observers.
