Abstract

As shown by Josef Fink, the passage from Ezekiel 14.14 was used in several patristic tracts on penance. It occurs, for instance, in the second letter of Clement and is also quoted by Cyprian and Justin Martyr. Images of the three men, influenced by these texts, appear several times in the Roman catacombs.2 It was, however, not this tradition but one established by St Augustine, which became seminal for the way in which medieval theologians and rtists interpreted Ezekiel 14.14.
