Abstract

ABSTRACTAlternate reality games have, throughout their existence, involved performance to varying extents while maintaining clear game elements. 2016’s The Tension Experience was so heavily based on performance that its very nature as a ‘game’ could be questioned, and it was more clearly defined as immersive theater. Tension's creators intentionally set out to ‘blur the lines’ between reality and fiction. This deliberate intention, as well as the removal of traditional theater structure in immersive theater, creates ethical issues surrounding audience agency and consent, and The Tension Experience explored ways to deliver a frightening and disturbing experience to an audience while obtaining informed consent.
