Abstract

The UK's Gender Identity Development Service places an emphasis on context—on assessing the wider context of the lives of young people referred to the clinic: their relationships, peer groups, cognitive development, and family dynamics. Considering questions and concerns around gender identity, one useful context to enrich understanding and empathy can come through reading novels: well-written ones that create whole worlds in which we meet and eventually understand individual characters.
