Abstract

O artigo aborda a lealdade dos escravos à União durante a Guerra Civil Americana, indo além de duas afirmações habituais, tanto “Lincoln libertou os escravos”, quanto “Os escravos se libertaram”. Ao fazê-lo, sonda como a abolição da escravatura foi obtida pela interação de dois atores poderosos, o Partido Republicano e seu líder, o presidente dos EUA, e os próprios escravos, que se afirmaram livres ao migrar para as linhas do Norte. Dialogando com E. P. Thompson, o artigo chama a atenção para o significado da exclusão de plebeus e trabalhadores da política institucional, apontando para a importância da história política também para os negros estadunidenses.
