Abstract

Introduction: Current literature indicates that African American individuals are at increased risk of becoming infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and suffer higher SARS-CoV-2-related mortality rates. However, there is a lack of consensus as to how the clinical outcomes of African American patients differ from those of other groups. The objective of this study was to define the clinical outcomes of African American and White hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Louisville, Kentucky.

Highlights

  • Current literature indicates that African American individuals are at increased risk of becoming infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and suffer higher SARS-CoV-2-related mortality rates

  • Provisional age-adjusted mortality data show that nonHispanic African Americans are more than twice as likely to have died from COVID-19 in 2020 compared to non-Hispanic White Americans (151.1 vs 72.5 per 100,000, respectively).[6]

  • Patients were eligible for inclusion if they were hospitalized from March 3, 2020 through July 1, 2020 with a provider diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and were positive for SARS-CoV-2 by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test

Summary

Introduction

Current literature indicates that African American individuals are at increased risk of becoming infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and suffer higher SARS-CoV-2-related mortality rates. To investigate the possibility of differences between African American and White patients for outcomes beyond mortality, we performed a study evaluating 13 clinical outcomes of hospitalized African American and White patients with SARS-CoV2 community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the city of Louisville, KY. These 13 outcomes have been examined in the literature; to our knowledge, our study is the first to compare all of them for African American and White patients in a single study.[1, 2, 7, 12,13,14,15]
