Abstract
In this issue of the American Journal of Cardiology, Vella et al 1 Vella AM Roux O Antiochos P Monney P Skalidis I Fournier S Eeckhout E Roguelov C Oestreicherd S Kirsch M Muller O Lu H Meta-analysis of the prognostic significance of carotid artery stenosis in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Am J Cardiol. 2023; (in press) Google Scholar report the results of their meta-analysis of the prognostic significance of carotid artery stenosis (CAS) in patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The meta-analysis included 6 studies with a total of 30,625 patients, 6,764 in the CAS group (22.1%) and 23,861 (78%) in the non-CAS group. The authors found no association between CAS and 30-day neurovascular outcomes after TAVI. Mortality at 30 days was higher in the CAS group and this was thought to be because of the higher co-morbidity burden in these patients. Stroke prevention remains a priority after TAVI, however, screening for carotid disease before TAVI is expected to yield limited benefits.
