Abstract

We have carried out 27 Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on YbAl 3 C 3 . The obtained NMR line is well decomposed into two powder pattern spectra characterized by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NQR) frequency ν Q =3.55 MHz (Al 2 d -site) and 0.35 MHz (Al 4 f -site). About the transition at exceptionally high temperature T * = 80 K, it was found that the NMR line becomes broadened rapidly just below T * , and T * increases by about 10 K at the field of 30 T. Analogous phenomena are commonly seen in many quadrupolar ordering systems, implying that the transition in YbAl 3 C 3 is associated with the quadrupolar order.
