Abstract

In order to study the state of polyvinylalcohol (PVA) in solution, high resolution NMR spectra of model compounds of PVA were observed; 2,4-pentanediol, and 2,4,6-heptanetriol were used as the model compounds, and were separated into their stereoisomers. The NMR spectra of pyridine, and heavy water solutions were obtained both at 60 and 100 Mc/sec. From the spectral analysis, it was shown that the conformation of isotactic model compounds is predominantly TTTT (corresponding to plane zig-zag structure), and that of syndiotactic model compounds is an exchange between TGTG', G'TGT (i.e., 2 1 helical structure) and TTTT. The conformation of the heterotactic model compound is probably TTGT. It was also shown that these specific conformations are due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
