Abstract

This evidence enables one to relate the distinctive chemical shifts for fluorine, oxygen, and other electronegative elements in noble-metal compounds to the major partici pation of 4d and 5d electrons in the bonds. These bonds of σ and τ tupes are indicated as of partially covalent character, and in some cases there is a definite hybrid character in the orbitals. Further refinement of the description in this model may be based on incorporating the nonorthogonality of the metal and ligand orbitals.
