Abstract

Red blood cell rupture (hemolysis) activates innate immunity and inflammation by releasing heme. Sundaram etal.1 implicate the immune sensor NLRP12 in hemolytic disease, showing that it controls necrotic cell death induction in response to heme combined with pathogen-associated molecules.
