Abstract

Introduction: Our laboratory previously reported a novel role for Natural Killer T (NKT) cells in cutaneous wound repair. Here, we provide the first description of NKT cell function in the early wound environment. Compared to wounds from wild type mice, early wounds from NKT cell deficient mice closed faster and contained augmented levels of neutrophil and monocyte/macrophage chemokines. Once they have arrived at the wound site, neutrophils and macrophages themselves are the major source of their respective chemokines.
