Abstract
Ethyl and sodium nitrite were studied for their genetic toxicity in bacteria and barley. At physiological pH the organic nitrite had a greater mutagenic effectiveness than the inorganic nitrite. Concurrent treatments with ethyl nitrite and primary amines resulted in enhanced effects. The implication of these results in the genetic health hazards due to environmental pollution is discussed.
