Abstract

Attempts have been made to prepare Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/ powders by the reduction-diffusion (RD) method for making Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x /magnetic powders. By using the RD method, it is possible to omit the subsequent homogenization treatment for eliminating the magnetically soft alpha -Fe phase. By adopting a suitable nitriding treatment, the magnetic properties of the RD Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x/ powders also exhibit identical or higher values than those of vacuum induction model (VM) Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x /powders. It is indicated that the RD method might be a cost-effective way for mass producing the starting materials of Sm/sub 2/Fe/sub 17/N/sub x/ magnets.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
