Abstract
Root nodule protoplasts, isolated from soybeans under anaerobic conditions, showed nitrogenase activity. Alternatively, rhizobia present in the root nodules ( Rhizobium japonicum ATCC No 10324), kept under the same conditions in pure culture showed no nitrogenase activity. Attempts to culture agglutinated and fusion products of root nodule and normal soybean protoplasts failed due to contaminations of rhizobia set free from burst protoplasts.
