Abstract

A novel flotation scheme which uses nitrogen flotation of pyrite ahead of sphalerite recovery was investigated on a continuous basis at Brunswick Mining employing Noranda designed minicells. Low xanthate additions proved to be effective for selective pyrite flotation. Concentrates of 39% Fe with recoveries around 42% were obtained. Attempts to float pyrite without collector addition gave recoveries of only around 3% with a grade of 33% Fe. This proves that the use of collector is necessary for pyrite flotation. Tails from pyrite flotation were fed to a second minicell for sphalerite flotation in which three options were tersted: 1. 1. CuSO 4 addition; no CaO addition. 2. 2. CaO addition; no CuSO 4 addition. 3. 3. Addition of both CaO and CuSO 4. These experiments proved that sphalerite can be floated without copper activation under plant conditions.
