Abstract
A 42 CD 4 steel was implanted with 40 keV 15N + ions. The nitrogen profile was determined by the 15N(p,αγ) nuclear reaction after different amounts of wear. The evolution of iron nitrides and carbonitrides was followed by Conversion Electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. After a 180 nm wear depth corresponding to about twice the initial implanted layer, nitrogen is still detected.
